Our "Bloom or Bust" Promise

Tulipa saxatilis is native to Crete and Turkey. Unlike many tulips, it can tolerate slightly more moisture and richer soils, making it an easier and more adaptable choice for many gardens.

A truly wonderful and aptly named botanical tulip, 'Lilac Wonder' is a form of Tulipa saxatilis (bakeri group). It is celebrated for its charming, bowl-shaped flowers that open wide in the sunshine. The petals are a beautiful shade of soft lilac-pink, which provides a stunning contrast to the large, striking, golden-yellow centre. The effect is like a little drop of sunshine held in a pink cup. Each stem can produce several flowers, creating a generous display from a single bulb. The glossy green leaves are also attractive. 'Lilac Wonder' is a fantastic performer, winning the RHS Award of Garden Merit for its reliability and beauty. It is an excellent choice for perennialising, forming substantial, spreading clumps over the years that will brighten any sunny corner of the garden in mid-spring.

Where to Plant:

A charming and very reliable botanical tulip, 'Lilac Wonder' (Tulipa bakeri) produces clusters of beautiful flowers. The petals are a lovely lilac-pink on the outside and open into a wide star in the sun to reveal a large, contrasting, bright yellow centre. It absolutely must have a position in full sun, as the flowers will not open properly without it. The soil must be very well-drained and gritty. It is a small, dwarf variety, perfect for the front of a sunny border, a rockery, or a gravel garden where it will naturalise happily.

How to Plant:

The small bulbs should be planted in the autumn, from September to November. Dig a hole and plant each bulb at a depth of about 10cm (4 inches), with the pointed tip facing upwards. They are most effective when planted in generous, dense clumps rather than being scattered singly, as this creates a beautiful carpet of starry flowers when they open together. Space the bulbs about 8-10cm apart.

Aftercare:

This is a very low-maintenance and rewarding tulip that will reliably multiply and return year after year with minimum fuss, provided it has a sunny, well-drained spot. There is no need to deadhead the flowers. You must allow the narrow foliage to die back completely on its own before removing it. A good baking in the sun during their summer dormancy is all they need to ensure a good show the following spring.
