Our "Bloom or Bust" Promise

Helmar' is a Rembrandt-style Triumph tulip, meaning it has the strong growth habit of a Triumph with the broken-colour flame pattern reminiscent of the famous, virus-induced tulips of the Dutch Golden Age.

A true classic with an artistic flair, 'Helmar' is a Triumph tulip that commands attention with its dramatic, bicolour blooms. Each petal is a canvas of rich, buttery yellow, boldly and beautifully painted with deep, wine-red flames that lick up from the base. The pattern is sharp and defined, creating a stunning visual contrast that is both fiery and cheerful. Standing on strong, reliable stems, 'Helmar' is a robust performer, weathering spring conditions with ease. It is an excellent choice for adding a splash of vibrant, reliable colour to mid-season borders and is particularly effective in large, impactful drifts. It also excels in container plantings and serves as a long-lasting, show-stopping cut flower, bringing its painterly beauty indoors for all to admire. Its timeless appeal and strong performance make it a garden favourite.

Where to Plant:

This is a very striking and dramatic Triumph tulip, with a look reminiscent of the old 'Rembrandt' tulips. It has bright, deep yellow petals that are dramatically and artistically streaked and flamed with a rich, fiery red. With strong, sturdy stems, it stands up well to spring weather. For the most intense colour, plant it in a position that receives full sun, in any fertile, well-drained soil. It is a superb choice for creating a bold statement in borders, formal bedding schemes, and containers.

How to Plant:

The bulbs should be planted late in the autumn, during October or November. Dig a generous hole and plant each bulb at least 15cm (6 inches) deep, or roughly twice the height of the bulb itself. Planting deeply in a sunny, well-drained spot is the key to encouraging it to flower for several years. Place the bulb with the pointed tip facing the sky and space them about 10-15cm apart to create a full display.

Aftercare:

This robust variety has a good chance of returning for a few years. To help it do so, deadhead the flowers once they have faded by snapping off the head. Allow the foliage to die back completely and turn yellow and straw-like before removing it; this takes about six weeks and is when the bulb builds up its energy for next year. Feeding with a liquid tomato feed after flowering until the foliage starts to yellow can also be very beneficial.
