Our "Bloom or Bust" Promise

A true classic, 'Flaming Parrot' won the prestigious Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society for its outstanding performance and reliable beauty in the garden.

An iconic and beloved variety, 'Flaming Parrot' sets the garden ablaze with its brilliant colours. The flowers are a vivid primrose yellow, with each petal dramatically and irregularly streaked with bold flashes of blood-red, like licks of flame. The large petals are deeply scalloped and ruffled, twisting elegantly as the flower opens to create a dynamic and fiery effect. No two flowers are ever the same, making for a thrilling and varied display. It is a sport of the famous 'Rembrandt' tulip 'The Smiling Queen' and carries all of its parent's vigour and beauty, but with the added drama of the parrot form. The strong stems hold the flamboyant flowers well above the foliage, making it a reliable and spectacular choice for borders and an absolute showstopper in a vase.

Where to Plant:

This is a truly spectacular and flamboyant Parrot tulip, with enormous, ruffled and waved petals of primrose yellow, dramatically flamed with rich red. The huge, heavy flower heads mean it is absolutely essential to plant them in a sheltered position, protected from strong winds and heavy spring rain which can easily spoil the blooms. They require a spot in full sun with fertile, very well-drained soil. They are an outstanding choice for a feature display in a border or as a magnificent cut flower.

How to Plant:

Tulip bulbs should be planted late in the autumn, ideally during October or November. This later planting helps to reduce the risk of the fungal disease, Tulip Fire. Dig a hole and plant each bulb at a depth of at least twice its own height, which is typically about 15cm (6 inches) deep. Ensure the pointed tip is facing upwards. Space the bulbs about 10-15cm apart to give each magnificent flower enough room to be appreciated.

Aftercare:

For the most reliable and impressive display, Parrot tulips are best treated as annuals, with fresh bulbs being planted each autumn. They are not known for re-flowering well in subsequent years. If you wish to try and save them, you must deadhead the flower as soon as it fades. Allow the foliage to die back and yellow completely before lifting the bulbs, drying them, and storing them somewhere cool and dark until it is time to replant.
