Our "Bloom or Bust" Promise

This is a Rembrandt-style tulip, but its streaky appearance is due to a stable genetic trait, not the Tulip Breaking Virus that famously caused 'Tulip Mania' in the 17th century.

One of the most famous and spectacular tulips of all time, 'Estella Rijnveld' is a true showstopper. Also known as the 'Gay Presto' tulip, its huge, heavy blooms are an explosive and random mix of raspberry red and pure white. The petals are outrageously ruffled, fringed, and twisted, creating a different look from every single angle. Each flower is completely unique in its markings, with some being mostly red with white splashes, and others the reverse. This variety is the absolute definition of flamboyant, bringing a chaotic and beautiful energy to the garden. The flowers are so large and heavy that they may need support, but the display is more than worth the effort. It's a living piece of art and a classic 'broken' colour parrot tulip.

Where to Plant:

This is a famously flamboyant and spectacular Parrot tulip, sometimes known as the 'Gay Presto' tulip. It has enormous, ruffled and feathered petals that are dramatically streaked in a bold combination of red and white. The huge, heavy flower heads make it essential to plant them in a sheltered position, protected from strong winds and heavy rain which can easily damage the blooms. A spot in full sun with very well-drained soil is required. It is an outstanding choice for a feature display in a border or as a magnificent cut flower.

How to Plant:

Tulip bulbs should be planted late in the autumn, ideally during October or November. This later planting helps to reduce the risk of the fungal disease, Tulip Fire. Dig a hole and plant each bulb at a depth of at least twice its own height, which is typically about 15cm (6 inches) deep. Ensure the pointed tip is facing upwards. Space the bulbs about 10-15cm apart to give each magnificent flower enough room to be appreciated.

Aftercare:

For the most reliable and impressive display, Parrot tulips are best treated as annuals, with fresh bulbs being planted each autumn. They are not known for re-flowering well in subsequent years. If you wish to try and save them, you must deadhead the flower as soon as it fades. Allow the foliage to die back and yellow completely before lifting the bulbs, drying them, and storing them somewhere cool and dark until it is time to replant.
