Bloom or Bust Guarantee

peruviana, often admired for its violet blue colouring, is a bulb variety especially well suited to pots & containers.

Scilla peruviana, the Portuguese squill, is one of those quietly theatrical spring bulbs that always earns a second look. From a neat clump of green foliage rises a stout stem topped with a densely packed, domed head of violet-blue blooms—bold in colour, yet beautifully composed.

Ideal for pots on a sunny terrace or a sheltered border where warmth lingers, it brings a subtle Mediterranean note to late spring displays and pairs effortlessly with silvers, grasses, and other sun-loving bulbs.

Why you’ll love it

Where to Plant:

Scilla peruviana (Portuguese Squill) needs full-sun, partial sun and a warm, sheltered position for the best flowering. Plant into fertile, humus-rich soil that drains well, and choose a spot protected from strong winds, especially for taller varieties.

How to Plant:

Plant bulb from September to December once conditions are suitable. Set them at the correct depth for the variety, spacing 15-20 cm apart apart where relevant, then firm in gently and water well after planting.

Aftercare:

Water regularly in dry weather and feed every two to three weeks once buds appear. Stake taller stems early and deadhead to keep plants flowering. After flowering, allow foliage to die back naturally before lifting or protecting bulb according to local conditions.
