Our "Bloom or Bust" Promise

This is one of the oldest daffodils in cultivation, grown for centuries and often believed to be the true 'narcissus' of ancient Greek myths and poets. Its other name, N. poeticus var. recurvus, refers to its poetic history and reflexed petals.

A classic and historic variety, 'Pheasant's Eye' is one of the last daffodils to bloom, extending the spring season beautifully. It features elegant, pure white petals that are distinctly swept back (reflexed), surrounding a very small, cup-like corona. The tiny cup is bright yellow with a clearly defined, fine red rim, which gives the flower its common name. It is beloved for its strong, sweet, and spicy fragrance that can perfume the air. It is an outstanding choice for naturalising in meadows, orchards, or informal parts of the garden where it will return and multiply for decades. It holds the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit.

Where to Plant:

This is a beautiful, ancient, and highly fragrant variety, properly known as Narcissus poeticus var. recurvus. It is one of the last daffodils to bloom, flowering in late spring, often in May. It has elegant, pure white, swept-back petals and a tiny, yellow cup edged with a fine red rim. It is an exceptionally tough and reliable variety, perfect for naturalising in long grass, meadows, or informal areas of the garden. It tolerates moister soils better than many other daffodils and thrives in sun or partial shade.

How to Plant:

The bulbs should be planted in the autumn, anytime from September to November. Dig a hole and plant each bulb at a depth that is roughly twice its own height, which is typically about 15cm (6 inches) deep. For a natural look, simply scatter the bulbs across the area you wish to plant and then plant them exactly where they land. Space them at least 10cm apart to allow them room to multiply into large, impressive colonies.

Aftercare:

This is a very low-maintenance daffodil. The most critical part of its care is to allow the foliage to die back completely on its own for at least six weeks after flowering has finished. Because it flowers so late, this means you must not mow the area until well into the summer, often July. This is essential for the bulbs to have enough energy to return year after year.
