The sterile white florets at the top of the spike act as a visual lure for pollinators, drawing them in to visit the fertile blue flowers below. It's a clever evolutionary trick!

A beautiful and distinctive variety, 'Mountain Lady' is a bicolour Grape Hyacinth that creates a stunning two-tone effect. Each flower spike features a dense cluster of florets, with the lower bells a clear, sky-blue, while the top of the spike is capped with a contrasting tuft of sterile, pure white florets. This RHS Award-winning variety is a selection of Muscari aucheri and has a neat, compact habit. It is an excellent choice for adding a touch of sophisticated colour to rock gardens, pots, and the front of borders, and it naturalises well to form larger clumps over time.

Where to Plant:

This is a striking and unusual Grape Hyacinth, with beautiful flower spikes that have dark blue-purple lower florets which fade to a pale, icy blue at the top. It is very easy to grow and will perform well in a position in full sun or partial shade, in any soil that has reasonable drainage. It is a wonderful choice for spring pots and containers, rockeries, or for planting in dense clumps at the front of a border to show off its unique graduated colour.

How to Plant:

You should plant the small bulbs in the autumn, anytime from September to November, for flowers the following spring. Plant them at a depth of about 10cm (4 inches) with the pointed tip facing upwards. To make the most of their two-tone colouring, they look best when planted in generous, tight-knit groups rather than scattered individually. Space the bulbs about 5-8cm apart to allow them to form a good-sized clump.

Aftercare:

This is a very low-maintenance bulb. It is normal for its grassy leaves to appear in the autumn and persist through the winter. After the flowers have finished in spring, it is essential to allow this foliage to die back and turn yellow on its own. This process feeds the bulb for next year's display. It will multiply happily; if you wish to control its spread, you should snip off the faded flower heads before they can set seed.
