Like its namesake mountain, this Muscari variety is topped with a crown of pure white florets, giving it the appearance of a snow-capped peak.

Named after the famous snow-capped peak, Muscari 'Mount Hood' is a truly delightful two-tone variety that brings a crisp, alpine freshness to the spring garden. It is characterised by its dense, conical spikes of tubular florets that are a rich, striking blue at the base and middle, crowned with a contrasting bouquet of pristine white flowers at the very top. This "snowy peak" effect is incredibly eye-catching and creates a superb bicolour display from a single bulb. Despite its dainty appearance, 'Mount Hood' is deceptively robust, fully hardy, and an excellent naturaliser, multiplying year after year to form impressive, long-lasting drifts of colour. Its light fragrance is a welcome bonus, attracting bees on sunny spring days. This variety works particularly well when planted en masse in borders, rock gardens, and especially in containers where its unique colouring can be admired up close. It pairs beautifully with yellow daffodils or white tulips for a classic, high-contrast spring combination.

Where to Plant:

A striking bicolour variety, 'Mount Hood' produces cones of rich blue flowers that are topped with a very distinct, snowy-white cap, like a snow-capped mountain. It is an adaptable and easy-to-grow bulb that is happy in either full sun or partial shade, in any ordinary garden soil that doesn't get waterlogged. It is an excellent choice for adding a touch of drama to spring pots and containers, or for planting in bold clumps at the front of a border.

How to Plant:

For a reliable display next spring, plant the small bulbs during the autumn months. Plant each bulb at a depth of around 10cm (4 inches) with the pointed end facing towards the sky. The bicolour effect is most dramatic when the bulbs are planted closely together in a dense group. Space the bulbs just 5-8cm apart from each other to create a tight, impactful display.

Aftercare:

Grape Hyacinths are very easy to look after. Do not be alarmed if they produce their grassy leaves in the autumn; this is a normal part of their growth cycle. Once the flowers have faded in the spring, let the foliage wither and turn yellow naturally. This is a vital process that ensures the bulb has enough energy to flower again the next year. They will spread to form larger colonies; deadhead the spent flowers if you wish to control this.
