Our "Bloom or Bust" Promise

Mangaves are a relatively new type of plant, a hybrid that combines the fast growth rate and interesting patterns of the Manfreda with the durability and architectural form of the Agave.

A truly unique and architectural succulent, 'Praying Hands' is a standout variety of Mangave (a hybrid between Manfreda and Agave). It forms a remarkable, tight, upright rosette of long, slender, concave leaves that curve inwards and upwards, creating a shape that strongly resembles a pair of praying hands. This form is completely different from the open rosettes of most other succulents. The leaves themselves are a beautiful deep olive-green, covered in a waxy coating that gives them a silvery-blue sheen, and are speckled with subtle, darker spots. The very tips of the leaves are tipped with a sharp, cinnamon-coloured spine. This is a stunning statement plant, perfect as a centrepiece in a container or a gravel garden. While it can tolerate very light frosts, it is best protected from winter wet and severe cold.

Where to Plant:

A truly unique and architectural succulent, 'Praying Hands' has a very distinctive shape, with its dark green leaves curling upwards and inwards to form a tight, artichoke-like rosette. For its survival in the UK, it must be grown in a pot that can be moved for winter protection. It needs a position in full sun to maintain its tight form and develop the best colouring on its leaf margins. A sunny patio, balcony, or a spot in a conservatory is the perfect location for this stunning specimen plant.

How to Plant:

Use a terracotta pot with a large drainage hole and a very gritty compost mix, such as a specialist cactus compost or your own mix of loam-based compost and horticultural grit. This can be done in spring or summer. When you plant it, make sure the base of the rosette is not buried. The plant should sit slightly high in its pot, with a top dressing of fine gravel or grit covering the compost surface. This prevents moisture from sitting against the leaves and causing rot.

Aftercare:

Water well during the summer months, but always allow the compost to dry out completely before watering again. Do not be tempted to overwater. In autumn, reduce watering significantly. Before any risk of frost, it is essential to move the pot to a frost-free environment such as a greenhouse, porch, or conservatory. It needs to be kept dry over winter. In spring, as the weather warms, you can move it back outside and resume watering.
