Ivory Bells' is a naturally occurring colour form of Fritillaria persica, found in the wild. Its selection and cultivation have made this beautiful, pale variant widely available to gardeners.

The beautiful and elegant counterpart to its dark purple cousins, 'Ivory Bells' is a highly sought-after Persian Fritillary. It produces a magnificent, tall spire which is densely packed with up to 30 or more nodding, bell-shaped flowers. The blooms are a stunning shade of creamy, greenish-ivory, creating a cool, luminous, and sophisticated effect in the late spring garden. The pale colour of the flowers provides a wonderful contrast to the grey-green foliage. 'Ivory Bells' is perfect for adding a strong, elegant vertical accent and looks particularly stunning in "white garden" schemes or paired with dark tulips and alliums for a classic, high-contrast look.

Where to Plant:

This is a beautiful, pale version of the dramatic Persian Lily, producing a tall, elegant spire of greenish-ivory, bell-shaped flowers. For a successful display, it must be planted in the sunniest, warmest position you can offer, with exceptionally free-draining soil. It requires a hot, dry dormant period over summer to ripen the bulb for next year's flowers. It is a superb architectural plant for a sheltered gravel garden or the back of a sunny border against a warm wall.

How to Plant:

Plant the large bulbs in the autumn. Deep planting is necessary to support the tall, heavy flower spike; dig a hole about 20cm (8 inches) deep. To guarantee the excellent drainage it craves, it is wise to add a good layer of horticultural grit to the bottom of the planting hole. Space the bulbs at least 30cm apart to give them room to develop. Water once after planting to settle the soil.

Aftercare:

After the flowers have faded, you must allow the handsome, greyish-green foliage to wither and die back naturally. It is essential to keep the area as dry as possible during the summer months. Do not be tempted to water it. The tall stems are generally strong but may require staking in more exposed gardens. Providing the right hot, dry conditions is the key to enjoying this plant for years.
