The common name "Crown Imperial" refers to the crown-like arrangement of flowers and the tuft of leaves on top. The 'foxy' smell from the bulb is a natural deterrent for garden pests, making it a beautiful and functional plant.
A truly majestic and architectural plant, 'Lutea' is the yellow form of the Crown Imperial. It produces a tall, thick, and robust stem which is topped in mid-spring with a spectacular whorl of up to ten large, nodding, bell-shaped flowers of a clear, luminous yellow. Sitting proudly above this floral crown is a pineapple-like tuft of fresh green, leafy bracts. It is a true statement piece for the garden, known for its regal presence and unique form. The entire plant has a distinctive musky scent, often described as 'foxy', which is a famous natural deterrent for rodents, squirrels, and deer.

Where to Plant:
This magnificent Crown Imperial, with its striking whorl of bright, clear yellow, bell-shaped flowers, is a real showstopper in the spring garden. It demands a position in full sun to flower well and reliably year after year. The soil must be fertile and, most importantly, very well-drained. The bulbs require a good baking during their summer dormancy, so avoid any spot that remains damp or heavily shaded. They are perfect for creating a bold, vertical statement in the middle of a border.
How to Plant:
The large bulbs, which have a distinct foxy aroma, should be planted in early autumn. The most crucial step is to plant the bulb on its side. The bulb has a hollow depression on top where the previous year's stem grew; planting it sideways prevents this from filling with water and rotting over winter. Dig a deep hole, around 20-25cm (8-10 inches), place a layer of grit in the bottom for drainage, and lay the bulb on its side. Space bulbs at least 30cm apart and water once.
Aftercare:
After the plant has flowered, you must allow the foliage to die back completely. This is when the plant sends energy back to the bulb for the next year's display, so do not be tempted to cut it back while it is green. In exposed locations, the tall stems may benefit from staking. They can be temperamental, but getting the planting right – full sun, excellent drainage, and planting on its side – is the best way to ensure a repeat performance.
