Our "Bloom or Bust" Promise

The common name, Ice Plant, is thought to derive from the tiny, reflective hairs on the foliage of some species, which can sparkle in the sun as if covered with ice crystals.

A truly beautiful and resilient succulent perennial, 'Ice Cream Salmon' is a star performer in the hottest and driest parts of the garden. Part of the innovative 'Ice Cream' series, it forms a low, tight mat of fleshy, deep green leaves that are excellent at conserving moisture. From late spring through summer, this tough foliage is adorned with a multitude of dazzling, daisy-like flowers. Each bloom is a stunning shade of warm, rosy-salmon, with a contrasting cool white eye that makes the colour pop. This plant thrives in conditions where others would fail, its flowers opening wide in the sun to create a carpet of vibrant colour. It is the perfect choice for a gravel garden, a sunny rockery, the top of a dry wall, or for spilling over the edges of a container, providing long-lasting colour with minimal effort.

Where to Plant:

To enjoy its dazzling display of warm, salmon-pink flowers, you must provide this plant with a spot in full, direct sun. As a hardy succulent, it is essential that it is grown in very free-draining soil. It is an ideal choice for hot, dry areas where other plants might struggle, such as a gravel garden, a scree bed, a rockery, or planted in the crevices of a sunny wall. It also performs beautifully in containers with a gritty compost mix.

How to Plant:

Container-grown plants can be planted from spring through to summer. Prepare the planting site by ensuring the drainage is excellent; dig a hole and add plenty of horticultural grit to the soil you have removed. Place the plant in the hole at the same depth it was in its pot. Fill in around the plant with the improved soil mix, firm down gently with your hands and water it well once.

Aftercare:

This is a very low-maintenance plant that thrives on neglect. After its initial watering, it is best left alone and will not require any further watering unless in cases of extreme, prolonged drought. It does not need feeding. The main consideration is ensuring it does not sit in wet soil over winter. The foliage will die back in autumn, overwintering as a small crown before re-sprouting vigorously the following spring.
