Pampas Grass is 'dioecious', meaning individual plants are either male or female. Female plants are the most sought-after as they produce the fuller, more impressive, and fluffier plumes that are prized by gardeners.

A spectacular and dramatic ornamental grass, Pink Pampas Grass brings magnificent scale, texture, and colour to the garden in late summer and autumn. It forms a large, dense tussock of tough, sharp-edged, grey-green leaves that arch gracefully. In late summer, tall, upright, cane-like stems rise high above the foliage, each topped with a huge, feathery, plume-like flower head. In this 'Rosea' variety, these plumes emerge a beautiful soft, silvery-pink, creating a stunning, soft-textured display that catches the light and moves beautifully in the breeze. The plumes persist well into winter, providing valuable structure and interest. This is a real statement plant, perfect for a large, sunny border, a gravel garden, or as a standalone specimen where its impressive size can be accommodated.

Where to Plant:

This is a large, architectural grass that needs a great deal of room and a position in full sun to produce its magnificent, pink-tinged plumes. Choose a spot in a large lawn as a specimen plant, or at the back of a substantial border where it will not crowd out other plants. It grows best in well-drained soil and is very tolerant of wind. It is vital to consider its eventual size and to plant it away from pathways, as the edges of its leaves are very sharp.

How to Plant:

While container-grown plants can be planted in summer if watered diligently, the ideal time to plant pampas grass is in the spring. This gives it a long growing season to establish a strong root system before winter. Dig a hole significantly wider than the container but to the same depth. Place the plant in the hole, ensuring the top of the rootball is level with the soil surface. Backfill with soil, firm it in well, and water thoroughly.

Aftercare:

The main annual task is to cut the plant back hard in late winter or early spring, just before new growth begins. Wearing thick, protective gloves and long sleeves is essential. Cut all the old foliage and flower stems down to a mound about 30cm high. Once established, it is very drought-tolerant and will not require feeding. The decorative plumes can be left on the plant for winter interest before the big prune.
