Our "Bloom or Bust" Promise

italicum, often admired for its green colouring, is a bulb variety especially well suited to woodland.

Arum italicum is a quietly striking woodland perennial, treasured as much for its foliage as for its flowers. In autumn and winter it unfurls handsome, silver-marbled leaves that lend a refined, architectural note to shaded corners. Come April, curious greenish spathes appear, followed by bright red berries that bring a welcome dash of colour to naturalistic planting.

Superb beneath shrubs and between perennials, Italian arum settles in gracefully and looks particularly composed when allowed to weave through a lightly shaded border or woodland edge.

  • Best for: woodland planting, underplanting and softly shaded borders
  • Interest: marbled foliage, spring spathes, red berries
  • Style: naturalising, understated, architectural

Where to Plant:

Arum 'italicum' (Italian arum) needs partial sun and a warm, sheltered position for the best flowering. Plant into fertile, humus-rich soil that drains well, and choose a spot protected from strong winds, especially for taller varieties.

How to Plant:

Plant bulb from September to December once conditions are suitable. Set them at the correct depth for the variety, spacing 20-30cm apart where relevant, then firm in gently and water well after planting.

Aftercare:

Water regularly in dry weather and feed every two to three weeks once buds appear. Stake taller stems early and deadhead to keep plants flowering. After flowering, allow foliage to die back naturally before lifting or protecting bulb according to local conditions.
