Where to Plant:

For the strongest stems and the clearest, most beautiful pink colouring, a site that receives a full day of sun is essential. As with all tall alliums, the soil must be free-draining, as they will not tolerate waterlogged conditions, especially during their winter dormancy. This variety, with its large, airy globes of soft pink, is ideal for the middle of a herbaceous border. It provides a gentle but definite vertical accent, and its colour mixes wonderfully with blues, whites, and other pastel shades.

How to Plant:

The best time for planting is in the autumn. The large bulbs need to be planted deeply to help support the tall flower spikes. Dig a hole around 15-20cm deep and place the bulb inside with the pointed end facing towards the sky. Space individual bulbs at least 25-30cm apart to ensure the large flower heads do not feel crowded and have space to shine. For a powerful visual effect, plant them in generous drifts or clumps.

Aftercare:

After the impressive pink globes have finished flowering, allow the strap-like leaves at the base of the plant to wither and turn yellow completely. It can be tempting to tidy them away, but this is the most crucial step for guaranteeing a good show next year, as it allows the bulb to store food. The spent flower heads are highly decorative and can be left standing to provide structural interest, or even cut and dried for indoor arrangements.
