Our "Bloom or Bust" Promise

Lady Jane' is taller and more robust than many other species tulips, making her an excellent choice for planting amongst other perennials where she can rise above them.

The quintessential "Lady Tulip," 'Lady Jane' is renowned for her exceptional grace and elegance. She is a cultivar of Tulipa clusiana, featuring the same slender, refined form. The flowers are held on tall, willowy stems that allow them to sway beautifully in the breeze. When the buds are closed, they form slim, candle-like spindles that are a rich rose-red on the outside. When the sun shines, the flowers open into beautiful, broad stars, revealing pristine, snow-white inner petals and a small, dark purple base. This dramatic day-and-night transformation is captivating. 'Lady Jane' is a superb perennialiser, reliably returning year after year and spreading gently to form enchanting drifts. She is perfect for adding a touch of classic, effortless style to sunny borders, cottage gardens, and meadow plantings.

Where to Plant:

A beautiful and exceptionally graceful species tulip, Tulipa clusiana 'Lady Jane' is slender and elegant. The flowers are a lovely cherry-red on the outside, opening in the sun to reveal a pure white interior. It absolutely must have a position in full sun, as the flowers will remain closed on cloudy days. The soil must be very well-drained and gritty. It is perfect for a rockery, a gravel garden, or the front of a sunny, sheltered border, and is a reliable perennialiser.

How to Plant:

The small bulbs should be planted in the autumn, from September to November. Dig a hole and plant each bulb at a depth of about 10-15cm (4-6 inches), with the pointed tip facing upwards. They are most effective when planted in generous, dense clumps rather than being scattered singly, as this creates a beautiful display when the starry flowers open together. Space the bulbs about 8-10cm apart.

Aftercare:

This is a very low-maintenance and rewarding tulip that will reliably multiply and return year after year with minimum fuss, provided it has a sunny, well-drained spot. There is no need to deadhead the flowers. You must allow the narrow, strappy foliage to die back completely on its own before removing it. A good baking in the sun during their summer dormancy is all they need to ensure a good show the following spring.
