Our "Bloom or Bust" Promise

The name Phygelius comes from Greek words meaning 'sun flight' or 'shunning the sun', which is somewhat ironic as these plants perform best when grown in a sunny position.

A superb and vibrant shrubby perennial, 'Candy Drops Tangerine' is a Cape Fuchsia that brings a long-lasting burst of warm, tropical colour to the garden. It forms a neat, bushy mound of attractive dark green foliage. From early summer often until the first frosts, the plant is adorned with elegant, arching sprays of slender, tubular flowers. The colour is a beautiful, soft yet bright shade of tangerine-orange, with a contrasting creamy-yellow throat that invites pollinators in. It is a wonderfully rewarding and easy-to-grow plant, prized for its exceptionally long flowering season and its ability to attract bees and other beneficial insects. It is perfect for adding height and colour to the middle of a sunny border or for use as a spectacular 'thriller' plant in a large mixed container.

Where to Plant:

A vibrant and colourful shrubby perennial, 'Candy Drops Tangerine' bears prolific, drooping clusters of fuchsia-like, warm tangerine-orange flowers all summer long. As a South African native, it demands the sunniest, warmest, and most sheltered spot in your garden. It is perfect for a hot border against a sunny wall or fence. It needs a fertile soil that holds some moisture but allows excess water to drain away freely. It also grows superbly in large pots.

How to Plant:

You can plant pot-grown specimens at any time during the growing season. Prepare the planting site by digging a hole and enriching the soil with organic matter. Place the plant in the hole so it sits at the same depth as it was in its pot. Fill in around the plant with the improved soil, firm down gently with your hands, and give it a good watering to help it establish.

Aftercare:

To keep the flowers coming, water consistently during dry spells and deadhead the old flower stalks as they begin to fade. Do not be tempted to prune the plant back in the autumn. It is best to leave the top growth intact over winter to provide some frost protection for the crown. In spring, after the risk of severe frost is over, cut all the stems back hard to a low framework, about 15cm from the ground. A protective winter mulch is highly recommended.
