Our "Bloom or Bust" Promise

Despite the common name Cape Fuchsia, Phygelius is not a true fuchsia. It is actually more closely related to snapdragons and foxgloves. The name simply comes from the resemblance of its flowers.

A fantastic, long-flowering, and easy-to-grow shrubby perennial, the Cape Fuchsia 'Candy Drops Deep Rose' brings a splash of vibrant, tropical colour to the garden for months on end. It forms a well-branched, bushy plant with attractive, deep green foliage. From early summer right through to the autumn, it produces a continuous supply of elegant, arching stems carrying clusters of slender, tubular, fuchsia-like flowers. The colour is a rich and vibrant shade of deep rose-pink, with a contrasting creamy-yellow throat that is often visible at the mouth of the bell. It is adored by bees and, in particular, hummingbirds in its native South Africa. This is a wonderfully rewarding plant, providing a huge amount of colour for very little effort, making it ideal for sunny borders or large patio containers.

Where to Plant:

This compact Cape Fuchsia is a fantastic plant for long-lasting summer colour, producing masses of tubular, deep rose-pink flowers. To perform well, it must have a warm, sheltered location in full sun. The ideal position is against a south or west-facing wall that will provide protection from cold winds and radiate heat. It prefers a fertile, moist but well-drained soil and is also an excellent choice for growing in a large patio container.

How to Plant:

Plant container-grown specimens in spring or summer. Dig a hole and improve the soil by mixing in some well-rotted garden compost or manure. Place the plant in the hole, checking that the top of its rootball is level with the surrounding soil. Backfill with the improved soil, firm it in gently around the base of the plant, and water it in thoroughly to settle the roots.

Aftercare:

Water the plant regularly during dry periods in the summer, especially if it is growing in a pot, to support continuous flowering. Regularly removing the faded flower trusses will encourage the production of new blooms well into the autumn. In most parts of the UK, it is best to leave the stems on over winter for protection and then cut the plant back hard to about 15cm in the spring, once the danger of hard frost has passed. Applying a deep winter mulch of bark or compost will help protect the roots from cold.
