Where to Plant:

This hardy hibiscus, or Rose of Sharon, produces beautiful, exotic-looking, large peach-pink flowers in late summer. To ensure it thrives and flowers well, it must have a position in full sun in a sheltered spot, protected from strong winds. It is perfect for adding a touch of the tropics to a sunny border, or can be grown as a specimen plant in a large container on a warm patio. It prefers a fertile, moist but well-drained soil.

How to Plant:

You can plant a container-grown hibiscus in spring or summer. Dig a hole twice the width of the pot and to the same depth. Add some well-rotted compost or manure to the bottom of the hole. Gently place the plant in, ensuring the top of its rootball is flush with the surrounding soil. Backfill with soil, firm it down well, and give the plant a deep watering. In containers, use a good quality, loam-based compost.

Aftercare:

Water regularly during its first year and in any prolonged dry spells, especially if grown in a pot. In spring, apply a balanced granular fertiliser around the base of the plant. Hardy hibiscus flowers on the current season's growth, so it can be pruned in early spring to maintain its shape and encourage more flower shoots. Remove any dead or crossing branches and shorten the main stems if required.
