A stunning Crown Imperial, 'Red Beauty' produces tall, dramatic spikes topped with a crown of leaves above a cluster of rich, deep red, bell-shaped flowers. For a reliable and impressive display, it must be grown in a sunny position in well-drained soil. It needs a warm, dry spot during its summer dormancy, so it is ideal for a sheltered, sunny border where it will not be overshadowed. Its strong, architectural form provides a fantastic vertical element among other spring-flowering plants.

How to Plant:

You should plant the large, pungent bulbs in early autumn. To ensure success, they must be planted on their side. This simple trick prevents the natural hollow on top of the bulb from collecting water and rotting during wet weather. Dig a hole about 20-25cm (8-10 inches) deep, place some grit in the base to aid drainage, and lay the bulb gently on its side before covering it with soil. Give each bulb plenty of space, at least 30cm apart.

Aftercare:

Allow the foliage to die back naturally after flowering has finished; this is a vital part of its life cycle and is essential for building the bulb's strength for the following year. They do not require any watering during the summer months. The tall stems are generally strong, but may need the support of a cane in more windswept gardens. Providing the correct growing conditions from the start is the key to enjoying these spectacular plants for years to come.
