Our "Bloom or Bust" Promise

This Fritillary is native to the high mountain slopes of northeastern Turkey, which is why it thrives in well-drained soil and can withstand cold winter temperatures.

A beautiful and striking species, Fritillaria michailovskyi is a small but dramatic fritillary that produces one to five nodding, bell-shaped flowers per stem. The blooms are a rich, deep, purplish-maroon on the outside, a colour that is spectacularly contrasted by a broad, very distinct band of bright golden-yellow at the petal tips. The inside of the bell is a glossy, bright yellow. This RHS Award-winning species is easy to grow and a reliable perennial, making it an excellent choice for adding a touch of jewel-like, exotic beauty to rock gardens, the front of borders, and containers where its unique colouring can be appreciated up close.

Where to Plant:

This charming dwarf fritillary requires completely different conditions to the Snake's Head. It needs a position in full sun with very sharp, free-draining soil. It is an alpine plant that will rot if it sits in wet ground, especially during its summer dormancy. It is therefore perfectly suited to a rock garden, a scree or gravel bed, or for growing in pots and alpine troughs where you have complete control over the drainage. Its nodding, bell-shaped flowers are a distinctive combination of deep purple and bright yellow.

How to Plant:

Plant the small bulbs in the autumn. As good drainage is so critical, it is wise to add a layer of horticultural grit to the bottom of the planting hole. Plant the bulbs at a depth of about 10cm (4 inches), with the pointed tip facing upwards. They are small plants, so for the best effect, plant them in tight clumps or groups of ten or more, spacing them about 8-10cm apart.

Aftercare:

Once flowering has finished, allow the narrow foliage to die back naturally. The key to long-term success with this species is to keep the bulbs relatively dry when they are dormant over the summer months. Do not water them during this period. In a pot, this is easily achieved by moving it to a dry, sheltered spot. It is a hardy bulb that is easy to care for, provided its drainage needs are met.
