Our "Bloom or Bust" Promise

Pickwick' is named after the main character in Charles Dickens' first novel, "The Pickwick Papers." Its enduring popularity since its introduction in 1925 makes it a true literary classic of the plant world.

A famous and much-loved heirloom variety, 'Pickwick' is a classic large-flowered Dutch Crocus that has graced gardens for generations. It is instantly recognisable for its beautifully patterned flowers. Each large, chalice-shaped bloom has a lovely pale, silvery-lilac ground colour that is delicately and artistically pinstriped with fine veins of deep violet-purple. The effect is elegant and refined, adding a layer of texture and interest that many solid-coloured crocuses lack. When the sun shines, the flowers open to reveal a glowing orange stigma, creating a cheerful contrast at the heart of the bloom. 'Pickwick' is a holder of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit for its reliability, vigorous growth, and outstanding beauty. It is an excellent choice for naturalising in lawns, where it will create beautiful, patterned carpets of colour year after year.

Where to Plant:

A highly distinctive and popular variety, 'Pickwick' stands out with its silvery-white petals that are heavily striped and feathered with a deep lilac-purple. It makes a real statement when planted in bold groups. It is well-suited to the front of a sunny border, lining a path, or filling containers where its intricate pattern can be appreciated. It can also be naturalised in lawns. A position in full sun is best, as the flowers will close up in the shade.

How to Plant:

Plant the corms in the autumn to flower the following spring. Dig holes and place each corm 8-10cm (3-4 inches) deep, with the pointed tip facing towards the sky. To make the most of the striking stripes, plant them in tight clusters or dense drifts rather than dotting them about singly. Space individual corms about 8cm apart to allow them room to develop. Water once after planting to settle the soil around them.

Aftercare:

Once planted, 'Pickwick' is very self-sufficient. After the flowers have finished, you must allow the grassy leaves to remain untouched until they have withered and turned yellow on their own. This process takes about six weeks and is essential for the corm to build up energy for the next spring. Avoid the temptation to tidy them up early. The corms are hardy and will not need any supplemental watering.
