Our "Bloom or Bust" Promise

Orange Monarch' was a sensation when it was first introduced in the Netherlands in 2010, winning multiple awards for its unique and dramatic colouring. It's named for the Monarch butterfly, which shares its orange and black markings.

A truly spectacular and unique variety, 'Orange Monarch' is a sensation in the spring garden. Unlike any other crocus, its blooms are a brilliant, vivid orange, heavily feathered on the outside with dramatic, dark purplish-black stripes. This creates an incredible, fiery, tiger-striped effect that is absolutely breathtaking. When the goblet-shaped flowers are closed, they showcase this remarkable pattern, but on sunny days they open fully to reveal the pure, intense orange interior. It is a sterile hybrid, meaning it won't self-seed, but it will reliably return each year, with its clumps slowly increasing in size. 'Orange Monarch' is a relatively new introduction and is highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts for its completely novel and show-stopping appearance. It flowers slightly later than some other crocuses, extending the season of interest.

Where to Plant:

This is a truly spectacular and unusual crocus that deserves a prime position. Its vibrant orange petals, intricately feathered with dark purple-bronze, are a real showstopper. For the most intense colour and reliable flowering, a spot in full sun with excellent drainage is paramount. It is perfectly suited to a gravel garden, a sunny rockery, or a special pot or trough where its detailed beauty can be admired up close and it will not be swamped by other plants.

How to Plant:

Plant the corms in the autumn to flower in the spring. Dig individual holes or a wider trench and plant the corms about 8-10cm deep, ensuring the pointed end is facing upwards. Space them at least 8cm apart to give them room to develop. When planting in containers, use a loam-based compost mixed with plenty of horticultural grit to ensure the sharp drainage this variety demands. Water them in once to settle the compost.

Aftercare:

After the stunning flowers have faded, you must allow the foliage to wither and die back naturally. This is essential for the corm to build up the strength needed to flower again the following year. It is a hardy crocus but dislikes winter wet, so ensuring good drainage at planting time is the key to its long-term success. It does not require any supplemental watering once established.
