Our "Bloom or Bust" Promise

The specific epithet portenschlagiana honours the 19th-century Austrian botanist, Franz von Portenschlag-Ledermayer, who discovered many plants in the Dalmatia region of Croatia, where this plant is native.

A tough, vigorous, and incredibly beautiful evergreen perennial, the Dalmatian Bellflower is a true garden workhorse. It forms a dense, spreading mat of small, rounded, bright green leaves that are completely obscured in summer by a spectacular mass of upward-facing, bell-shaped flowers in a brilliant shade of violet-blue. This plant is exceptionally robust and reliable, able to thrive in a wide range of conditions and grow happily in sun or partial shade. It is perfect for cascading over the edges of walls and containers, creeping through cracks in paving, or forming a dense, weed-proof ground cover at the front of a border. Its long-lasting display and ironclad constitution have earned it the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit.

Where to Plant:

Often called the Dalmatian Bellflower, this vigorous plant is very adaptable, growing happily in full sun or partial shade. It is not fussy about soil type, provided it is well-drained. Its cascading habit makes it a classic choice for spilling over the edges of walls and raised beds, or out of containers. It is also perfect for softening path edges, filling gaps in a rockery, or creating a dense, weed-suppressing mat of colour at the front of a border.

How to Plant:

Plant pot-grown specimens at any time from spring to autumn. Dig a hole just large enough to accommodate the rootball. Place the plant in the hole so that it sits at the same depth as it was in its pot. Fill in around the plant with soil, firm it down with your hands, and give it a thorough watering to help it establish. Space plants about 30-40cm apart, as they will spread readily to form a continuous, dense carpet of foliage and flowers.

Aftercare:

This is an easy-care and robust perennial. Water it regularly after planting until it is well-established. Once settled, it is fairly drought-tolerant but will appreciate a watering during very hot, dry spells. After the main flush of vibrant purple-blue flowers is over in summer, shear the entire plant back by about a half. This will tidy it up, remove the spent flowers, and encourage a fresh flush of foliage and often a second, later flowering.
