Where to Plant:

This is a truly sophisticated and unusual indoor bulb, producing mysterious, velvety flowers of an ethereal greenish-white. It must be grown in a pot indoors. Select a container that is just a few centimetres wider in diameter than the bulb itself, as they flower best when their roots are comfortably snug. To wake the bulb from dormancy, place the pot in a warm position that receives plenty of bright, indirect light, such as on a windowsill.

How to Plant:

Plant the bulb in autumn, about 8 to 10 weeks before you would like it to flower. Use a good quality, well-drained potting compost. When potting, ensure that the top third of the bulb, including its pointed neck, remains exposed above the level of the compost. After planting, water it in well, allowing any excess to drain away. Do not water it again until you see the first green shoot emerge from the top of the bulb.

Aftercare:

Once growth is visible, begin watering regularly, but only when the top layer of compost feels dry. Feed every two weeks with a balanced liquid fertiliser as the leaves develop. After the unique flowers have faded, cut the thick flower stalk off near the base but keep the long leaves growing. Continue to water and feed all summer. In early autumn, stop watering and move the pot to a cool, dark place for about two months to induce a dormant period before starting the cycle again.
