Our "Bloom or Bust" Promise

It is named after the Dutch Princess Irene, sister of the former Queen Beatrix, and its colours (orange with purple flames) are reminiscent of the Dutch royal house.

A true garden royal and an RHS Award of Garden Merit winner, 'Prinses Irene' is a hugely popular Triumph tulip for very good reason. It commands attention with its vibrant, glowing orange petals, each marked with a stunning, deep purple flame that licks up from the base of the flower. This combination of colours is both fiery and regal, creating a rich tapestry of tones in the mid-spring garden. As a shorter, incredibly sturdy tulip, it stands up brilliantly to unpredictable spring weather, making it a reliable and low-maintenance choice. Its compact stature is perfect for the front of borders, edging paths, rockeries, and is particularly spectacular when planted en masse in containers. It pairs famously with deep purple tulips or violas, which echo its flames and make the orange appear even brighter.

Where to Plant:

A deservedly popular and very famous Triumph tulip, 'Prinses Irene' is celebrated for its fragrant, vibrant orange flowers, each petal marked with a distinctive and beautiful purple flame. It has strong, sturdy stems that stand up well to spring weather. For the most intense colour, plant it in a position that receives full sun, in any fertile, well-drained soil. It is a superb choice for creating a bold statement in borders, formal bedding schemes, and is particularly wonderful in containers.

How to Plant:

The bulbs should be planted late in the autumn, during October or November. Dig a generous hole and plant each bulb at least 15cm (6 inches) deep, or roughly twice the height of the bulb itself. Planting deeply in a sunny, well-drained spot is the key to encouraging it to flower for several years. Place the bulb with the pointed tip facing the sky and space them about 10-15cm apart to create a full display.

Aftercare:

This robust variety has a good chance of returning for a few years. To help it do so, deadhead the flowers once they have faded by snapping off the head. Allow the foliage to die back completely and turn yellow and straw-like before removing it; this takes about six weeks and is when the bulb builds up its energy for next year. Feeding with a liquid tomato feed after flowering until the foliage starts to yellow can also be very beneficial.
