Our "Bloom or Bust" Promise

Hippeastrum papilio is a true species Amaryllis, meaning this is how it is found in the wild in its native Brazil, not a man-made hybrid. This gives it a unique and authentic wild beauty.

An extraordinary and captivating species Amaryllis, 'Papilio' is a true collector's item, bearing little resemblance to its hybrid cousins. Its name, meaning "butterfly" in Latin, perfectly captures the unique, winged appearance of its blooms. The flowers are an intricate mosaic of colours, featuring a base of creamy, greenish-white, which is heavily and artistically brushed with deep maroon and burgundy veining. Two upper petals are broad and wing-like, while the lower, narrower petals resemble a butterfly's antennae, creating an unmistakable and elegant silhouette. Unlike the trumpet shapes of other Amaryllis, 'Papilio' has an exotic, orchid-like grace that is utterly enchanting. Each stem typically produces two to three of these mesmerising flowers. As a species plant, it is prized for its natural, untamed beauty and is a must-have for any serious bulb enthusiast looking for something truly special and sophisticated.

Where to Plant:

Often called the Butterfly Amaryllis, this is a distinct species with elegant, orchid-like flowers of greenish-white, intricately striped and brushed with deep maroon. In the UK, it must be grown as an indoor plant in a container. It appreciates a warm room with bright but indirect light; avoid harsh, direct midday sun. Unlike many hybrids, it tends to be more evergreen, so it makes an attractive foliage plant throughout the year.

How to Plant:

The bulb should be planted with its top third, or 'shoulders', exposed above the compost. Use a snug-fitting pot and a very well-drained potting mix. After potting, water it in well once, then place it in a warm, bright spot. Like other amaryllis, you should wait until you see signs of new growth before you begin a regular watering routine. This can take several weeks.

Aftercare:

This species has slightly different needs to the large-flowered hybrids. It does not require a hard, dry dormant period. After flowering, cut down the spent stalk and continue to water and feed the plant through the summer. In autumn, reduce watering for a few months to encourage a rest period, but do not let the bulb dry out completely; the leaves will likely remain. In late winter, increase watering and feeding to encourage a new flower spike to form in the spring.
