Our "Bloom or Bust" Promise

Named after the Roman goddess of wisdom, arts, and strategy, 'Minerva' has a classic, bold pattern that has stood the test of time, making it one of the most well-known Amaryllis varieties in the world.

A truly classic and ever-popular Amaryllis, 'Minerva' has been a festive favourite for decades, and for good reason. It is a vigorous and reliable bloomer, producing large, single flowers with a truly striking pattern. The blooms are a rich, vibrant red, forming the perfect backdrop for a bold and dramatic, crisp white star in the centre. This starburst pattern is incredibly eye-catching and is often complemented by a fresh green throat. The petals are broad and form a classic, wide, open-faced flower shape that shows off its dramatic colouring to perfection. 'Minerva' embodies the traditional colours of the holiday season, offering a cheerful, bright, and unapologetically festive display. Its timeless appeal, reliability, and dazzling high-contrast pattern ensure that it remains one of the most sought-after and widely grown Amaryllis varieties year after year.

Where to Plant:

A classic and very popular variety, 'Minerva' produces large, bold flowers of a brilliant scarlet-red, each with a very distinct, star-shaped white centre. This tender bulb must be grown as a houseplant in a container. Choose a pot that is only slightly wider than the bulb to encourage a good display. A position on a warm, bright windowsill is ideal for encouraging the strong flower spike to grow. Once in bloom, a slightly cooler spot will help the flowers last longer.

How to Plant:

For winter flowers, plant the bulb in the autumn. Using a well-drained potting mix, place the bulb in the pot so that its top third, or 'shoulders', are left uncovered by the compost. Firm the compost around the bulb and water it in thoroughly just once. Place it in a warm location and wait for a new shoot to appear. It is very important not to water again during this period, as this can cause the dormant bulb to rot.

Aftercare:

When the new shoot is a few centimetres tall, you can start watering regularly, typically when the compost feels dry to the touch. Feed with a houseplant fertiliser every couple of weeks. Turn the pot every few days to stop the stem leaning towards the light. After flowering, snip off the spent flower stalk but continue to care for the leaves. Water and feed throughout the summer months. To reflower it next year, stop watering in early autumn and give the bulb a cool, dark, dry rest for at least 8 weeks.
