Our "Bloom or Bust" Promise

Named after the majestic, snow-capped Mount Tacoma (now Mount Rainier) in Washington, USA, its pure white, impressive blooms perfectly evoke the image of a snowy peak.

A true classic and enduring garden favourite, 'Mount Tacoma' is a stately and robust tulip that has graced gardens with its clean elegance for decades. It produces impressively large, fully double, peony-like blooms of the purest, shimmering white. The show begins with tightly furled buds that are attractively tinged with fresh green, providing a beautiful contrast before the flower opens. As the blooms unfurl, they reveal a packed mass of pristine white petals, creating a magnificent, rounded flower head that is both bold and beautiful. 'Mount Tacoma' is renowned for its reliability and vigour, bringing a sense of bright, sophisticated charm to the late spring garden. It is the cornerstone of any white garden theme and looks spectacular when planted in large, formal drifts, creating a sea of white. It also pairs beautifully with almost any other colour, providing a cool and elegant counterpoint to brighter shades. Its strong stems and fragrant blooms also make it a superb choice for cutting.

Where to Plant:

This is a classic and beautiful double late tulip, producing large, peony-like flowers of pure, creamy white. The heavy, multi-petalled flower heads mean it is best to plant them in a sheltered position, protected from strong winds and heavy spring rain which can damage the blooms. A spot in full sun with fertile, very well-drained soil is required. It is an excellent choice for adding a touch of elegance to a border or for a luxurious display in a large container.

How to Plant:

Tulip bulbs should be planted late in the autumn, ideally during October or November. This late planting helps to reduce the risk of the fungal disease, Tulip Fire. Dig a hole and plant each bulb at a depth of at least twice its own height, which is typically about 15cm (6 inches) deep. Ensure the pointed tip is facing upwards. Space the bulbs about 10-15cm apart to give each large flower enough room to open fully.

Aftercare:

For the most spectacular and reliable display, fancy double tulips like this are best treated as annuals, with fresh bulbs being planted each autumn. To try and encourage them to return, you must deadhead the flower as soon as it fades and feed the plant with a high-potassium fertiliser. It is then essential to allow the foliage to die back and yellow completely before lifting the bulbs, drying them, and storing them somewhere cool and dark until it is time to replant.
