Our "Bloom or Bust" Promise

The species name 'humilis' means 'low' or 'humble', but the intense, multi-coloured bloom of 'Little Beauty' is anything but humble—it's a real show-off in the rock garden!

A truly beautiful and aptly named botanical tulip, 'Little Beauty' is a stunning cultivar of Tulipa humilis. It produces multiple flowers per stem, each one a vibrant gem. The petals are a rich, glowing cherry-red to magenta-pink on the outside, opening wide on sunny days to reveal a dramatic, deep violet-blue base that is often ringed with a crisp white halo. This striking central "eye" gives the flower an incredible depth and contrast. Held on short, sturdy stems above narrow, grey-green foliage, it's a perfect choice for bringing a splash of intense, jewel-like colour to the early spring garden. It is an excellent perennialiser, forming lovely, tight clumps that expand each year, and it holds an RHS Award of Garden Merit for its reliability and outstanding beauty.

Where to Plant:

This is a wonderful and very reliable species tulip, producing jewel-like flowers of a vibrant magenta-pink that open wide in the sunshine to reveal a deep blue, black-ringed centre. As a dwarf variety, it is perfect for the front of a sunny border, a rockery, a gravel garden, or for growing in pots and alpine troughs. It absolutely must have a position in full sun, as the flowers will remain closed on cloudy days, and requires very well-drained, gritty soil to thrive. It is an excellent choice for naturalising.

How to Plant:

The small bulbs should be planted in the autumn, from September to November. Dig a hole and plant each bulb at a depth of about 10cm (4 inches), with the pointed tip facing upwards. They are most effective when planted in generous, dense clumps rather than being scattered singly, as this creates a beautiful carpet of colour when the starry flowers open together. Space the bulbs about 8-10cm apart.

Aftercare:

This is a very low-maintenance and rewarding tulip that will reliably multiply and return year after year with minimum fuss, provided it has a sunny, well-drained spot. There is no need to deadhead the flowers unless you wish to for tidiness. You must allow the narrow, strappy foliage to die back completely on its own before removing it. A good baking in the sun during their summer dormancy is all they need to ensure a good show the following spring.
