Our "Bloom or Bust" Promise

This is one of the few tulips that is reliably fragrant, releasing a sweet scent, especially on a sunny day.

A treasure from 1845, 'Couleur Cardinal' is a historic and beloved Triumph tulip that exudes antique charm. It is celebrated for its rich, complex colouring and delightful fragrance. The petals have a luxurious, velvety texture, showcasing a deep cardinal-red that is dramatically flushed with a moody plum-purple on the outside, creating a smouldering, jewel-like effect. As a shorter variety, it's perfect for the front of the border or for lining a pathway where its beauty can be admired up close. Most notably, it is one of the few tulips that is reliably fragrant, releasing a sweet scent that perfumes the air on sunny spring days. This quality makes it an exceptional choice for planting in pots and containers placed near doors, windows, or on patios.

Where to Plant:

A classic and historic variety dating back to 1845, 'Couleur Cardinal' is a wonderfully rich and fragrant tulip. It produces deep, velvety crimson-scarlet flowers with a steely blue bloom at the base of the petals. It is known for its strong, sturdy stems that stand up well to wind and rain. For the most intense colour, plant it in a position that receives full sun, in any fertile, well-drained soil. It is a superb choice for formal bedding, borders, and containers.

How to Plant:

The bulbs should be planted late in the autumn, during October or November. Dig a generous hole and plant each bulb at least 15cm (6 inches) deep, or roughly twice the height of the bulb itself. Planting deeply in a sunny, well-drained spot is the key to encouraging it to flower for several years. Place the bulb with the pointed tip facing the sky and space them about 10-15cm apart to create a full display.

Aftercare:

This robust variety has a good reputation for returning year after year. To help it do so, deadhead the flowers once they have faded by snapping off the head. Allow the foliage to die back completely and turn yellow and straw-like before removing it; this takes about six weeks and is when the bulb builds up its energy for next year. Feeding with a liquid tomato feed after flowering until the foliage starts to yellow can also be very beneficial.
