Thyme 'Coccineus' (Thymus)

Where to Plant:

This is a popular, low-growing variety of creeping thyme which forms a dense, aromatic, evergreen mat of foliage. In early summer, it is completely smothered in a mass of tiny, crimson-pink flowers that are a magnet for bees. It must have a position in full sun and requires very sharp drainage, as it will rot in damp conditions. It is perfect for a rockery, a gravel garden, for planting between paving stones, or for spilling over the edges of sunny, dry walls.

How to Plant:

Plant pot-grown thyme at any time during the growing season. Dig a hole the same size as the pot and ensure the surrounding soil is gritty and free-draining. Place the plant in the hole so it sits at the same depth as it was in its pot. Firm the soil around it and water it in. If planting between pavers, use a gritty compost mix to fill the gaps. Space plants about 20-30cm apart to allow them to spread and join up.

Aftercare:

This is an exceptionally low-maintenance plant. It is very drought-tolerant once established and should not be fed. The only pruning required is a light trim with shears right after it has finished flowering. This removes the spent flower heads and encourages the foliage to stay dense, green, and compact, preventing it from becoming woody.
