Our "Bloom or Bust" Promise

Perry's White' is a true heritage plant, having been first introduced by the renowned British nurseryman Amos Perry way back in 1906. It has remained a garden favourite for over a century!

A timeless and elegant classic, 'Perry's White' is one of the most famous and beloved of all Oriental Poppies. It produces huge, breathtakingly beautiful, bowl-shaped flowers in early summer. The enormous petals are like pure white, crumpled silk, creating a wonderfully delicate and romantic effect. At the base of these pristine white petals is a dramatic and contrasting deep purple-black blotch, which surrounds the central, architectural, velvety-black seed pod. The flowers are held on tall, strong, bristly stems above a substantial clump of coarse, silvery-green, hairy foliage. Like all Oriental Poppies, it will enter a period of dormancy after flowering, dying back in mid-summer before new leaves emerge in autumn. It is a true garden aristocrat, bringing grace and drama to the border.

Where to Plant:

This is a classic and elegant Oriental Poppy, producing large, pure white, tissue-paper-like flowers, each with a contrasting deep purple-black blotch. It requires a position in full sun to produce strong stems and a good show of flowers. The soil must be deep and well-drained to accommodate its long taproot, which is prone to rotting in wet, heavy ground. It is a wonderful choice for bringing a touch of class to a sunny border in early summer.

How to Plant:

Plant container-grown specimens in spring or autumn for best results. Be aware that if you plant it now, the foliage will soon die back as the plant enters its natural summer dormancy. Choose the final planting spot carefully, as it dislikes being moved once established. Dig a deep hole, place the plant in gently without disturbing the rootball, and ensure the crown is level with the soil surface. Backfill with soil, firm gently, and water well. Space plants about 60cm apart.

Aftercare:

It is essential to know that Oriental Poppies become dormant after flowering, and the foliage will disappear completely in mid-summer. This is normal. New leaves will grow in autumn. After the flowers have faded, cut the spent stems and all the old foliage right back to ground level. This keeps the plant looking tidy. The tall, heavy flowers will need support from a frame or canes, put in place before the plant gets too tall in spring.
