Our "Bloom or Bust" Promise

The name 'Purrsian Blue' is a clever pun, combining the idea that cats love Nepeta (and purr) with a nod to the "Persian" origin of many cat breeds and the plant's blue flowers.

A superb modern variety of Catmint, 'Purrsian Blue' is a compact, well-behaved, and incredibly long-flowering perennial. It forms a neat, dense, tidy mound of small, aromatic, grey-green leaves. From late spring right through to late summer, the plant is covered in a profusion of short, upright spikes crowded with small, tubular, lavender-blue flowers. Unlike older, sprawling varieties, 'Purrsian Blue' maintains its tight, rounded shape all season without flopping open, making it perfect for edging paths and borders. The fragrant foliage is attractive to cats (though less so than some other varieties), while the flowers are an absolute magnet for bees and other pollinators, creating a constant buzz of activity. It is tough, drought-tolerant, and very easy to care for.

Where to Plant:

This is a superb, compact variety of Catmint, forming a neat mound of aromatic, grey-green foliage. For the most prolific flowering and tightest habit, a position in full sun is essential. It is not fussy about soil type, growing happily in chalk, clay, or sand, but it must be well-drained as the roots can rot in persistently wet ground. It is an excellent choice for the front of a sunny border, for edging a path where its scent can be released when brushed against, or in a gravel garden.

How to Plant:

Plant container-grown specimens in spring or summer. Dig a hole that is the same depth as the pot and roughly twice the width. Gently tease out the roots at the bottom of the rootball and place the plant in the hole, ensuring the top of the rootball is level with the surrounding soil. Backfill, firm gently around the plant, and water in well to help it establish. Space individual plants about 45cm apart to allow them room to spread.

Aftercare:

Once established, this plant is very drought-tolerant. To encourage a second flush of its lovely periwinkle-blue flowers later in the season, it is a good idea to shear the whole plant back by about a third after the first wave of blooms has faded in mid-summer. This will also refresh the foliage. In late autumn, you can cut the entire plant back to ground level for vigorous new growth the following spring.
