Our "Bloom or Bust" Promise

The unusual shape of the 'Hoop Petticoat' daffodil is perfectly designed to be pollinated by bees. The wide bell guides the insect in, ensuring it makes contact with the pollen.

A charming and delightful miniature daffodil, 'Golden Bells' is a selection of the species Narcissus bulbocodium, commonly known as the "Hoop Petticoat" daffodil. It is prized for its unique and distinctive flower shape. The blooms consist of a huge, widely flaring, bell-shaped corona (the "petticoat") and tiny, almost insignificant pointed outer petals. The flowers are a brilliant, shining golden-yellow and are held on short, slender stems above fine, grassy foliage. They are wonderfully prolific and will happily naturalise in a suitable spot, creating a dense, shimmering carpet of golden bells in early spring. This is a perfect choice for rock gardens, pots, or for naturalising in damp turf.

Where to Plant:

This is a delightful and distinctive 'Hoop Petticoat' daffodil, which looks very different from its larger cousins. It produces a profusion of small, bright golden-yellow flowers, each with a widely flared trumpet and tiny, almost invisible petals. It requires a position in full sun and well-drained soil to thrive. It is perfect for a rock garden, a gravel bed, an alpine trough, or for naturalising in short grass where its charming, diminutive form will not be overshadowed.

How to Plant:

You should plant the small bulbs in the autumn. As they are smaller than standard daffodils, a planting depth of around 10cm (4 inches) is sufficient. Place the bulb in the hole with the pointed tip facing the sky. They are most effective when planted in generous drifts rather than dotted about singly. For a dense clump, space them about 8-10cm apart.

Aftercare:

These daffodils are very low-maintenance. There is no need to deadhead the small flowers. The most important rule is to let the fine, grassy foliage die back completely on its own for at least six weeks after flowering has finished before you mow or tidy the area. This is essential for the bulb to build up the energy reserves needed to return and flower again the following spring. They will happily multiply where conditions are suitable.
