Our "Bloom or Bust" Promise

The almost-white appearance of 'Silver Fox' is due to one of its parents, Agave titanota, which is known for its pale, ghostly colouration. This thick waxy coating is a natural sunblock for the plant.

A truly spectacular succulent, 'Silver Fox' is a dazzling architectural plant that almost appears to be made of metal. It forms a stunning, low, symmetrical rosette of broad, fleshy leaves. The leaves are covered in a very thick layer of waxy powder (farina), which gives them an incredible, ghostly, silvery-white appearance that reflects the sunlight. This thick coating also helps protect the plant from intense sun and drought. The edges of the leaves are lined with tiny, soft, cinnamon-coloured teeth, and the sharp tip of each leaf is a matching colour. The overall effect is incredibly dramatic and modern, making 'Silver Fox' a breathtaking centrepiece for a container or a gravel garden, where it will contrast beautifully with darker plants and stones.

Where to Plant:

This striking succulent is prized for its rosette of broad, silvery-white leaves that are so pale they can look almost metallic, often with a faint purple blush. In the UK, it is essential to grow this plant in a container to ensure its survival through the winter. It requires a position in full, direct sun to develop its most intense silver colouring and to maintain a compact, healthy shape. A sun-drenched patio, a south-facing gravel area, or a bright conservatory are all perfect locations. It must be moved to a frost-free place for winter.

How to Plant:

Plant in spring or summer into a terracotta pot, which is porous and helps the compost to dry out effectively. Use a very gritty and free-draining compost mix; a specialist cactus and succulent compost is ideal, or you can create your own by mixing equal parts loam-based compost and horticultural grit. When potting, position the plant so its crown sits slightly proud of the compost level. Finish with a top-dressing of grit or fine gravel, which helps to keep the base of the leaves dry and prevents rot. Water once after potting to settle the compost.

Aftercare:

During the summer growing season, water the plant thoroughly, but only when the compost has completely dried out from the previous watering. It is drought-tolerant and resents being overwatered. Feed sparingly, perhaps once or twice during the summer, with a heavily diluted cactus or succulent fertiliser. The most critical part of its care is winter protection. Before the first frosts in autumn, move the pot to a bright, dry, and frost-free location like a conservatory, cold greenhouse, or a well-lit porch. Keep the plant almost completely dry until spring returns.
