A spectacular and dramatic succulent, 'Mission to Mars' is a large and impressive Mangave that truly looks like something from another planet. It forms a huge, solitary rosette of very broad, thick, fleshy leaves that have a pronounced arching, upright habit. The colour is its most stunning feature: a deep and sultry shade of rich burgundy-red, with the colour being most intense in full, direct sunlight. The leaves are overlaid with a waxy coating that gives them a slight silvery sheen and are edged with small, cinnamon-brown teeth. This is a magnificent architectural specimen, perfect for a large container on a sunny patio where it will form a commanding focal point. Its bold form and unique, otherworldly colouring make it a must-have for lovers of dramatic, low-maintenance plants.
The intense red colouration of 'Mission to Mars' is a stress response to high levels of UV light. In lower light conditions, the plant will appear greener, but its famous red colour will quickly return when it is moved back into full sun.

This large and dramatic succulent forms a broad, arching rosette of reddish-maroon leaves that are so heavily speckled they appear almost solid red in good light. In the UK climate, it is essential to grow this plant in a container to ensure its survival. Choose the sunniest, warmest spot you have, such as a south-facing patio or gravel garden, where it will receive at least six hours of direct sun per day. This will intensify its incredible colour. It must be brought into a protected, frost-free location for the winter.
How to Plant:
Plant in spring or summer into a terracotta pot that has plenty of drainage holes. Use a very gritty and free-draining compost mix; a combination of loam-based compost with at least a third of horticultural grit or perlite is ideal. When potting, ensure the crown of the plant sits slightly above the level of the compost to prevent it from rotting. It is good practice to add a layer of grit as a top dressing, which helps keep the base of the leaves dry. Water once after planting to settle the compost.
Aftercare:
During the summer, water the plant thoroughly, but only when the compost has completely dried out from the previous watering. Feed sparingly once or twice during the growing season with a diluted cactus fertiliser. The most critical part of its care is winter protection. Before the first frosts arrive in autumn, move the pot into a bright, dry, and frost-free place like a conservatory, cold greenhouse, or a well-lit shed. Keep the plant almost completely dry throughout the winter until spring arrives.

I ordered the mixed hyacinth collection and the scent in my garden this April was absolutely heavenly. Every single bulb produced a strong, beautiful flower and the colours were stunning together. A fantastic purchase, I'll be back for more next year!
