Our "Bloom or Bust" Promise

The common name 'Thrift' is thought to come from its 'thrifty' nature, as it can thrive and flourish in very poor, thin soils where many other plants would struggle to survive.

A tough, resilient, and charming evergreen perennial, Thrift or Sea Pink is a familiar sight in coastal areas. 'Splendens' is a particularly fine selection, forming neat, dense, tussock-like cushions of fine, grassy, deep green foliage. From late spring into early summer, these tidy mounds are topped by a profusion of slender, leafless stems, each carrying a perfect, globe-shaped flower head. The flowers are a vibrant, deep rose-pink and are held well above the foliage, creating a delightful 'drumstick' effect. This plant is incredibly tolerant of salt spray, wind, and poor, sandy soils, making it an essential plant for coastal gardens. It is also perfect for rockeries, gravel gardens, or for edging a sunny, well-drained border, where it will provide long-lasting colour with minimal fuss.

Where to Plant:

Commonly known as Thrift, this seaside native thrives in an open, sunny position. It is exceptionally tolerant of wind and salty air, making it a perfect choice for coastal gardens. It demands very well-drained, even poor or sandy, soil and will fail in heavy, waterlogged conditions. Its low, tufted mounds of grassy foliage are ideal for the front of a sunny border, a rock or gravel garden, for planting in crevices in walls, or for edging pathways.

How to Plant:

Plant young plants in the spring or summer. Dig a hole that is the same depth and width as the pot the plant is in. Gently tease out the roots at the bottom of the rootball and place it in the hole, ensuring the top of the rootball is level with the surrounding soil. Backfill with soil, firm it in gently, and water well to settle the plant. Space individual plants about 20-30cm apart to allow them room to form their characteristic neat cushions.

Aftercare:

This is a very low-maintenance plant. It is extremely drought-tolerant once established and should not require additional watering or feeding. The key to keeping it looking good is to deadhead the faded, papery flower heads by snipping the stalks back to the base. This will encourage a longer flowering period. Over time, the centre of the clump may die out; you can rejuvenate the plant by lifting it in early spring, dividing it, and replanting the vigorous outer sections.
