Our "Bloom or Bust" Promise

Native to the Caucasus region, Allium tripedale was once classified as Nectaroscordum tripedale due to its nectar-rich flowers, which are highly attractive to bees.

A rare and exceptionally beautiful species, Allium tripedale is a treasure for the discerning gardener. In late spring, it sends up sturdy stems topped with large, hemispherical clusters of delicate, bell-shaped flowers. The blooms are a soft, ethereal pinkish-white, with each individual floret nodding gracefully from its pedicel. This variety forms an impressive clump over time, creating a lush and romantic display. Its broad, glossy green leaves are also highly ornamental, adding to its appeal long before the flowers appear. Perfect for a moisture-retentive, partially shaded spot in a woodland garden or border, it offers a soft, graceful beauty that is quite distinct from the more common sun-loving, globe-shaped alliums.

Where to Plant:

This is an unusual and beautiful allium that, unlike its relatives, appreciates soil that retains some moisture and will not tolerate drying out in summer. Choose a location in full sun or partial shade with fertile, humus-rich soil that doesn't become waterlogged. It is an excellent choice for a damp border or alongside a stream or pond where other alliums might fail. It produces elegant, loose umbels of bell-shaped, soft pinkish-white flowers.

How to Plant:

Plant the bulbs in the autumn. Position the bulbs with the pointed tip facing upwards, at a depth of about 10-15cm. Space them approximately 15cm apart to allow them room to develop into healthy clumps. For a graceful and charming effect, plant them in groups of five or more, where their delicate flowers can create a gentle drift of colour. Incorporating some well-rotted organic matter into the planting hole will help the soil retain the moisture this variety enjoys.

Aftercare:

During prolonged dry spells in the spring and summer, this allium will benefit from a good watering. After the flowers have faded, allow the foliage to die back completely and naturally, as this is how the bulb builds up its energy reserves for the following year. Where it is happy, it will gently multiply to form a larger clump. The spent flower heads can be removed by snipping the stalk at the base, or left on the plant.
