Make way for a stellar performance. 'Red Giant Star' is a magnificent hybrid that commands attention with its massive flower heads and unique colouration. It features the huge, starry florets of its christophii parentage but infuses them with a rich, reddish-pink hue, centered with a deeper red eye. The individual flowers are enormous, creating a lacy, open globe that can span over 8 inches wide. It blooms on strong, relatively short stems, making it a robust and wind-resistant choice for a high-impact position in the mid-border. The combination of its impressive size, intricate floral detail, and warm, radiant colour makes it a living sculpture in the garden, a true showstopper that draws the eye and sparks conversation.
Red Giant Star' is a prized cross between Allium christophii and Allium atropurpureum, inheriting the giant, starry structure of the former and the deep colouring of the latter.

Where to Plant:
This allium needs a position in full sun to develop its large, reddish-purple flower heads and strong stems. As with all ornamental onions, excellent drainage is paramount to prevent the bulbs from rotting in wet winter weather. It is a striking specimen for the middle of a sunny border, where its unique colour and starry flower shape can act as a focal point. It works well planted amongst silver-leaved perennials or grasses, which will complement its rich tones.
How to Plant:
Plant the bulbs in the autumn. For a plant named 'Giant Star', deep planting is key to support the flower stalk. Aim for a depth of at least 15-20cm from the base of the bulb to the soil surface, with the pointed tip facing the sky. Space the bulbs generously, at least 30cm apart from one another, to give each plant enough room to show off its impressive flower head. Planting in groups of three or five will create a cohesive and dramatic impact.
Aftercare:
This is a low-maintenance bulb once established. It is drought-tolerant and should not require any additional watering. After the impressive flower globes have faded, you must allow the foliage at the base to die back completely. This process of senescence is vital for the bulb to store sufficient energy for a reliable performance the next year. The decorative seed heads can be left on the plant for extended visual interest.
We partner with elite growers to provide only top-size, professional-grade bulbs. Bigger bulbs mean stronger roots and more spectacular blooms.
