Our "Bloom or Bust" Promise

This allium is a short-statured show-off! It puts all of its energy into creating a massive flower head that's often wider than the entire plant is tall.

A rare and captivating beauty for the rock garden or the front of a border, Allium nevskianum is a true collector's item. This low-growing species is famed for its huge, perfectly round flower heads that are almost comically large for its short stature. The 6-inch globes of intense raspberry-red to wine-purple flowers sit just above a pair of broad, silver-grey, tulip-like leaves. The contrast between the dramatic flower and the ornamental foliage is simply stunning. It’s a jewel-like plant that offers an incredible visual impact from a very compact form, perfect for containers or a sunny, well-drained gravel garden.

Where to Plant:

This is a distinctive, low-growing allium that requires a specialist position to thrive. It demands a location in full sun with exceptionally sharp drainage, making it a perfect candidate for an alpine house, a dedicated rock garden, or a gravel bed. The soil must be gritty and allowed to bake during the summer months to replicate its native habitat. Its main attraction is the pair of huge, broad, blue-grey leaves that lie almost flat on the ground, from which a short stem bearing a dense, raspberry-pink globe emerges.

How to Plant:

Plant the bulbs in the autumn. Set the bulb so that its neck is just at the soil surface, planting to a depth of about 10-15cm. It is vital to incorporate a generous amount of horticultural grit into the planting hole to ensure water drains away rapidly. Give each plant plenty of space, at least 30cm apart, so that the magnificent foliage has room to spread out without being crowded. It can also be grown in a deep pot using a very gritty, loam-based compost.

Aftercare:

Care for this allium is primarily about maintaining the right conditions. Protect it from excessive winter wet. It is very drought-tolerant and should not need additional watering. The huge leaves are a major feature and will naturally begin to wither as the flower opens. Allow the foliage to die back completely after flowering to feed the bulb for next season. This is a collector's plant that rewards specific care with a truly unique and dramatic appearance.
