Our "Bloom or Bust" Promise

Hollyhocks have been cultivated in gardens for centuries. In Victorian times, their tall stature made them perfect for planting against walls to hide less attractive outbuildings, a role they still perform beautifully today.

The quintessential English cottage garden plant, this Hollyhock mix provides towering spires of colour and a wonderful vertical accent at the back of a sunny border. Hollyhocks produce tall, stately stems lined with large, impressive, open-faced, single or semi-double flowers. This mix will contain a beautiful range of classic cottage colours, including soft pinks, deep reds, creamy whites, buttery yellows, and potentially even dramatic near-blacks. They are magnets for bees and butterflies, which are drawn to the pollen-rich centres of the simple, open blooms. While technically a perennial, they are often best treated as biennials, flowering in their second year from a spring sowing to create their magnificent and iconic floral display throughout the height of summer.

Where to Plant:

Choose a sunny spot, ideally against a wall or fence which will offer some shelter from strong winds. Hollyhocks are a classic cottage garden plant and thrive at the back of a border, where their tall spires add impressive height and a vertical accent. They tolerate most soils but will perform best in well-drained soil that has been enriched with some organic matter. Ensure they have good air circulation to help prevent fungal diseases.

How to Plant:

Plant young plants or bare roots in the spring or autumn. Dig a hole large enough to accommodate the root ball, ensuring the crown of the plant sits level with the surface of the soil. If planting bare roots, soak them for a few hours before planting. Space plants about 60cm apart to give them room to flourish. Water them in well after planting to help settle the soil around the roots. For a traditional look, plant them in groups of three or five.

Aftercare:

Water young plants regularly until they are well established. Mature plants are fairly drought-tolerant but will benefit from a deep watering during prolonged dry spells. As the tall flower spikes grow, they may require staking for support, particularly in more exposed locations. After the flowers have faded, you can cut the stalks down to the ground. Alternatively, leave a few stalks standing to allow the seed heads to develop and self-seed, providing you with new plants for future years. Watch out for rust, a common hollyhock ailment, and remove any affected leaves promptly to prevent its spread.
