Tulip 'Barbados'

Where to Plant:

This is a spectacular and exotic-looking fringed tulip, with large, rich red flowers whose petals are edged with a dramatic, crystalline fringe. Due to the substantial size of the flower heads, it is very important to plant them in a sheltered position, protected from strong winds and heavy spring rain which can cause the stems to bend or break. They require a spot in full sun with fertile, very well-drained soil. They are an outstanding choice for a bold display in containers or as a stunning cut flower.

How to Plant:

Tulip bulbs should always be planted late in the autumn, ideally during October or November. This late planting helps to reduce the risk of the fungal disease, Tulip Fire. Dig a hole and plant each bulb at a depth of at least twice its own height, which is typically about 15cm (6 inches) deep. Ensure the pointed tip is facing upwards. Space the bulbs about 10-15cm apart to give each magnificent flower enough room to be appreciated.

Aftercare:

For the most impressive display, fancy fringed tulips like this are best treated as annuals, with fresh bulbs being planted each autumn. They are not reliable at re-flowering well in subsequent years. If you wish to try and save them, you must deadhead the flower as soon as it fades. Allow the foliage to die back and yellow completely before lifting the bulbs, drying them, and storing them somewhere cool and dark until it is time to replant.
