Allium 'Ostara'

Where to Plant:

Choose a location in full sun to get the most impressive flowers and sturdy growth. This hybrid is particularly valued for its attractive, broad grey-green foliage that remains handsome for longer than many other alliums. It requires well-drained soil to prevent the bulbs from rotting over winter. With its compact but sturdy form and deep reddish-purple globes, 'Ostara' is perfect for the front or middle of a sunny border and is also an excellent choice for growing in containers.

How to Plant:

Plant the bulbs in the autumn, between September and November. Position each bulb with its pointed tip facing upwards, at a depth of approximately 15cm, which is about three times the height of the bulb itself. Space the bulbs around 20-25cm apart to give the foliage plenty of room to spread and to allow air to circulate. Planting in groups of three, five or more will create a cohesive and striking clump of colour and form. Water once after planting to settle the soil.

Aftercare:

A very reliable and low-maintenance variety. Once the flower heads have faded, you should allow the foliage to die back naturally, even though it stays looking good for a long time. This process is essential for the bulb to store energy and produce a fantastic display the following year. The dried seed heads can be left on the plant as they hold their shape well, providing extended architectural interest into the summer months.
