Grape Hyacinth 'Valerie Finnis' (Muscari)

Where to Plant:

This is a delicate and beautiful variety of Grape Hyacinth, producing elegant spires of pale, ice-blue flowers that fade to white at the base. It is very easy to grow and will thrive in a position in full sun or partial shade. It is not fussy about soil type, as long as it is not extremely waterlogged. It is perfect for creating a soft, subtle river of colour at the front of a spring border, for underplanting roses or deciduous shrubs, or for growing in pots and containers.

How to Plant:

The small bulbs should be planted in the autumn, from September to November, for flowers the following spring. Plant them at a depth of about 10cm (4 inches), with the pointed tip facing upwards. To achieve the best visual effect, they should be planted in large, generous drifts rather than in small, scattered groups. Space the bulbs about 5-8cm apart to create a dense and impactful carpet of colour.

Aftercare:

This is a very low-maintenance bulb. It is normal for the strappy green leaves to appear in the autumn and remain through the winter. After the flowers have faded in spring, it is essential to let this foliage die back naturally, as this is how the bulb stores energy for next year's display. It will multiply freely; if you wish to limit its spread, you should snip off the faded flower heads before they can produce seed.
