Our "Bloom or Bust" Promise

Hellebores are sometimes called the "Christmas Rose" or "Lenten Rose" because of their habit of flowering during the Christian seasons of Christmas and Lent, bringing beauty to the coldest months.

A truly exquisite and much sought-after Lenten Rose, 'Double Ellen Yellow Spotted' is a winter and early spring treasure. It produces beautiful, large, nodding or outward-facing, fully double flowers. The blooms are composed of multiple layers of ruffled petals in a gorgeous shade of creamy, primrose-yellow. Each petal is then delicately and artistically speckled and spotted with a contrasting rich shade of burgundy or deep red, with the spotting often being heaviest towards the centre of the flower. These stunning blooms are held on strong stems above handsome clumps of leathery, divided, deep green, evergreen foliage. They provide a vital source of colour and interest when little else is happening in the garden and are a welcome sight for early-emerging pollinators.

Where to Plant:

A particularly charming and unusual variety, this hellebore produces beautiful, soft yellow double flowers, each petal adorned with fine reddish-purple speckles. It is perfect for a special spot in a shady border where its detailed flowers can be appreciated. It needs a position in partial shade, protected from the hot summer sun. The ideal soil is rich in organic matter, moisture-retentive but still free-draining, as the plant dislikes sitting in waterlogged ground.

How to Plant:

Plant pot-grown hellebores from autumn through to spring for best results. Prepare the planting area by digging a hole and working in plenty of organic matter to create the fertile conditions it loves. Gently place the plant in the hole so it is at the same depth as it was in its pot. It is vital that the crown of the plant is not buried below the soil level, as this can cause it to rot. Firm the soil back around the plant and give it a good watering.

Aftercare:

In the middle of winter, just as you can see the new flower buds emerging from the ground, it is essential to remove all of the old, leathery leaves from the previous year. Snip the old leaf stalks right back to the ground with secateurs. This simple act showcases the flowers and helps to keep the plant healthy. A feed in spring after flowering and an annual mulch of leaf mould will keep your plant performing well for years to come.
