Our "Bloom or Bust" Promise

The 'Double Ellen' series of Hellebores are named after Ellen Akerboom, a prominent Dutch Hellebore breeder. They are renowned for their vigorous growth and stunning, fully double flowers in a wide range of colours.

A truly captivating and elegant Lenten Rose, 'Double Ellen White Spotted' is a must-have for the late winter and early spring garden. It produces stunning, large, nodding or outward-facing, fully double flowers. The blooms are composed of many layers of silky, ruffled petals, creating a very full, luxurious effect. The base colour is a clean, creamy-white, which acts as the perfect canvas for the dramatic and artistic speckling of deep burgundy-maroon spots. The spotting is unique to each flower, often concentrated towards the centre, drawing the eye in. These beautiful blooms are held on strong, sturdy stems above handsome clumps of leathery, palmate, deep green foliage that remains evergreen. They are a godsend in the garden, providing exquisite colour and detail when little else is in bloom, and are a vital early food source for emerging bees.

Where to Plant:

A truly captivating variety, 'Double Ellen White Spotted' produces beautiful, fully double white flowers that are artistically freckled with deep maroon-purple spots. It is perfect for brightening up a shady corner of the garden. Choose a spot in partial shade, such as a woodland border or underneath the canopy of trees, where it will be protected from strong summer sun. It prefers a rich, moist but well-drained soil, with a neutral to alkaline pH.

How to Plant:

Plant pot-grown hellebores from autumn to spring for best results. Prepare the planting site by digging a hole and working in plenty of organic matter to create the fertile conditions it loves. Gently place the plant in the hole, ensuring it is planted at the same depth as it was in its pot. The crown of the plant must not be buried below the soil level. Fill in around the plant, firm the soil down, and give it a good watering.

Aftercare:

In mid-winter, just as you see the new flower buds emerging, it is essential to remove all of the old, large leaves from the previous year. Cut the leaf stalks right back to the ground with secateurs. This simple action shows off the flowers to their best advantage and improves air circulation, which helps to keep the plant healthy. A feed in spring after flowering and an annual mulch will keep it performing well.
