Our "Bloom or Bust" Promise

Negrita' is so prized for its colour and reliability that it has been used as a parent for many other successful tulips, including the bicolour 'Flaming Flag'.

An icon of the spring garden, 'Negrita' is arguably the most famous and beloved deep purple tulip in the world. This Triumph variety boasts large, egg-shaped blooms of the most sumptuous and velvety shade of deep, royal purple. The colour is incredibly saturated and consistent, providing a sense of luxury and drama to any planting scheme. When touched by sunlight, the petals reveal a subtle, silky sheen and even richer violet tones. 'Negrita' stands on famously strong, weather-resistant stems, holding its noble blooms with pride through spring showers. Its reliability, intense colour, and classic shape make it a cornerstone of garden design, perfect for creating breathtaking mass plantings, as a dramatic counterpoint to lighter colours, or as a sophisticated cut flower.

Where to Plant:

A hugely popular and reliable Triumph tulip, 'Negrita' is celebrated for its classic goblet shape and its intense, deep purple-violet flowers. It has strong, sturdy stems that stand up well to spring weather, making it very versatile. For the richest colour, plant it in a position that receives full sun, in any fertile, well-drained soil. It is a superb choice for creating bold blocks of colour in borders, formal bedding schemes, and containers, and it combines beautifully with other spring flowers.

How to Plant:

The bulbs should be planted late in the autumn, during October or November. Dig a generous hole and plant each bulb at least 15cm (6 inches) deep, or roughly twice the height of the bulb itself. Planting deeply in a sunny, well-drained spot is the key to encouraging it to flower for several years. Place the bulb with the pointed tip facing the sky and space them about 10-15cm apart to create a full display.

Aftercare:

This robust variety has a good chance of returning for a few years. To help it do so, deadhead the flowers once they have faded by snapping off the head. Allow the foliage to die back completely and turn yellow and straw-like before removing it; this takes about six weeks and is when the bulb builds up its energy for next year. Feeding with a liquid tomato feed after flowering until the foliage starts to yellow can also be very beneficial.
