Our "Bloom or Bust" Promise

His Excellency' is so tall and sturdy that it rarely needs staking, making it a surprisingly low-maintenance way to get a huge architectural impact in your garden.

Announcing its arrival with truly impressive stature, 'His Excellency' stands as one of the tallest alliums available. Reaching heights of over 4 feet, its thick, sturdy stems are topped with huge, 8-inch globes of lilac-pink flowers. This variety blooms a little later than 'Globemaster', helping to extend the allium season further into summer. The enormous flower heads are packed with starry florets, creating a ball of colour that adds a powerful and architectural element to the back of the border. Its sheer size and regal posture make it a standout specimen that draws the eye from across the garden, earning its distinguished name with every bloom.

Where to Plant:

Choose a location that receives at least six hours of direct sunlight per day. Well-drained soil is essential, as these large bulbs will rot in soggy ground. They are perfect for adding height and structure to the back or middle of perennial borders and make stunning, long-lasting cut flowers.

How to Plant:

In the autumn, plant each bulb with the pointed tip facing upwards, about 15-20cm (6-8 inches) deep. This depth is crucial to help support their tall, heavy flower heads. Space them at least 20-30cm (8-12 inches) apart to give them room. For a powerful visual statement, plant in bold drifts of five or more bulbs. Water them once after planting to help settle the soil.

Aftercare:

Once the impressive flower globes fade, allow the foliage to die back and turn yellow naturally. Do not cut it down while it is still green. This is the most important step for ensuring a repeat performance, as it allows the plant to store energy in the bulb for next year's bloom. The dried seed heads can be left for extended structural interest or removed by snipping the stalk at the base.
