Our "Bloom or Bust" Promise

Allium 'Forelock' is closely related to Allium sphaerocephalon, but its distinctive crest makes it a more dramatic and eye-catching selection for gardeners seeking novelty.

With a striking and unusual form, Allium 'Forelock' brings a wild, windswept elegance to the garden. It builds upon the classic drumstick shape with a dramatic flourish. The main bloom is a dense, elongated oval of burgundy florets that gradually lightens to a soft green at the base. Bursting from the top is a spectacular, trailing crest of long, thread-like purple florets that resemble a lock of hair caught in the wind. This tufted "forelock" gives the bloom an incredible sense of movement and drama. It’s an ideal choice for adding a sculptural, artistic touch to borders and gravel gardens. The two-toned effect and unique silhouette make 'Forelock' a standout specimen that bridges the gap between cultivated formality and untamed natural beauty.

Where to Plant:

Choose a location that enjoys full sun throughout the day, as this will ensure the strongest, straightest stems and the most vibrant flower colour. Excellent drainage is non-negotiable; plant in a sandy or gritty soil to prevent the bulbs from rotting in wet winter conditions. Allium 'Forelock', with its unique, tall, and slender profile topped by a quirky tuft, is perfect for adding vertical interest and a touch of humour to the middle or back of a perennial border. It looks particularly effective when planted in drifts, weaving through other grasses and late-summer flowering plants.

How to Plant:

Plant the bulbs this coming autumn, ideally between September and November. Dig holes and plant each bulb to a depth of approximately 15cm, which is about three to four times the height of the bulb itself. This depth helps to anchor the tall stems securely. Give them adequate space to show off their distinctive form, spacing them at least 20cm apart. For the most striking visual effect, plant in groups of five, seven, or more, allowing their intriguing silhouettes to create a bold statement. Water them in once after planting to settle the soil.

Aftercare:

This allium is exceptionally low-maintenance once it has established. It is drought-tolerant and will not require any supplemental watering. The most critical step for ensuring a repeat performance is to allow the foliage to die back and turn completely yellow after the flowers have faded. Do not be tempted to cut it back while it is still green, as this is how the bulb gathers energy for next year’s bloom. The spent flower heads are decorative and can be left standing to provide structural interest well into the autumn.
